A skate film made by girls, with girls, for girls.

If you’ve ever explored the world of skate films, you’ll know that women are a rare sight. Young girls are an even rarer sight.

We owe it to our girls to change that.

Directed, created and shot by a women and non-binary led team, How To Be A Roll Model puts our Project Fearless girls at the centre of their skating story.

Aiming to ignite change within the skate community and empower girls and women around the world to get on their boards, it’s a shout-out to freedom, friendship and pure Project Fearless power.

“Now, when other Fearless skaters head online for inspiration, they’ll see people just like them: girls with an invitation to own the skatepark, to learn and fall and get right back up again, together.”

-Mérida, Project Fearless Founder

The Roll Models story

It’s spring 2020 lockdown, and our Project Fearless skate coaches want to send the girls videos to watch, learn from and stay inspired. But they quickly notice a problem: there’s a real lack of content featuring accessible role models that would speak to the crew’s soul.

There was only one thing for it. On our autumn 2020 Skate & Create, we’d produce a how-to video featuring our very own Fearless girls. Relatable and real, it would encourage girls around the world to skate, create and explore new-found confidence.

As well as acing new skills and tricks, our girls would have a hands-on learning journey with the awesome female and non-binary film crew who’d bring the story to life, sharing their own stories, experiencing scriptwriting and art direction first-hand and picking up handycams and GoPros to film their own shots.

Fast forward to now, and it’s rolled into reality: How To Be A Roll Model is a truly unique platform for the girls to become the role models they wanted to see, and to inspire future skaters worldwide.

From skatepark to society

A group of girls aged 9-14 skating — while learning from accessible role models in the creative industry — is also a group of future women embracing their own determination and skill, and taking up space where they might not usually be seen.

That’s a step that lots of girls and women still don’t have the chance to take. But knowing that these girls aren’t afraid of jumping onto a board is both an inspiration and an invitation for others to do the same.

It might start in the skatepark, but the power of the Roll Models message is limitless.

Super shout-out to our incredible crew:
